FAQ: Stewardship and Governance
Since our first service, we've never passed an offering plate. God is first. God went first. So, we bring to God our first and best. We give because God gave His first and best in Jesus (Romans 5:8). Generosity is our privilege, and we give out of joy, not out of obligation. We don't have to give; we get to give (2 Corinthians 9:7).
We take financial stewardship seriously. As Paul wrote about the gifts he carried for the church, “we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man” (2 Corinthians 8:21).
How the church is governed
Who leads and oversees the church?+
The Church of Eleven22 is staff led and elder governed. Pastor Joby Martin is the only elder who is also employed by the church. Details about our governance can be found here: https://coe22.com/about
Who approves compensation and budgets?+
Our Elder Board approves the annual budget, including total staff pay. Pay for our lead pastor is set by a group of our elders not on staff. No one at Eleven22 sets their own pay. For our whole team, we compare pay against outside salary data for churches and nonprofits of similar size. We do not disclose individual employee compensation.
Audits and accountability
Is the church independently audited?+
Yes. An independent accounting firm audits the church's finances every year. Our audited financial statements are summarized in our annual report. We are in full compliance with all regulatory requirements and strive for best practices among peer churches.
Read the 2025 Annual ReportDid the church receive a PPP loan?+
Yes. In April 2020, during the COVID-19 shutdowns, the church received Paycheck Protection Program funding. We used it to pay employee salaries for the church and Hope's Closet, following the terms of the PPP program available during the pandemic. The loan was forgiven in 2021 under the program's rules.
Did PPP money help buy the Retreat Center?+
No. PPP funds paid staff salaries in 2020. The Retreat Center was purchased in 2020 and financed separately. Both were reviewed by the church's outside auditors and included in our audited financial statements.
The Retreat Center
What is the Retreat Center?+
The Retreat Center is a ministry of The Church of Eleven22. Pastor Joby calls it camp for adults. He talks about it often in sermons. It's used all year for ministry: men's and women's retreats, father-daughter retreats, vision summits, pastor retreats and events with ministry partners. Nearly 2,000 people have attended so far in 2026.
Learn more about the Retreat CenterWhy is the property so large?+
Most of the land is protected by conservation easements, which keep it from being developed and protects the endangered species that inhabit the land.
Who can use the Retreat Center?+
Every Retreat Center event must be approved through the master calendar process that the church uses for all event planning. The Retreat Center hosts church ministry events, discipleship retreats and events with ministry partners.
What is the “staff housing” for?+
What some are calling “the staff house” at The Retreat Center is known as Cumberland Cabin. It's nine additional bedrooms to have space to house the staff and serve staff who host our retreat guests, so more people can attend overnight events. The lead pastor has responsibilities at many retreats and has space at Cumberland Cabin as well. Adding this cabin increased total rooms at The Retreat Center by 36% which allows more people to experience the property over time.
Why do some Retreat Center events have a fee?+
Many events at The Retreat Center cost attendees nothing. Some have a fee to help cover food and activities. The amount depends on the event.
