Prayer Walk Guide

Prayer Walk

One of the most loving things you can do for your neighbor is pray over them.

Walk your neighborhood (alone or with a friend or your Disciple Group) and ask God for repentance, renewal, radical devotion and revival.

01 / Start here

What is prayer walking?

“Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.”

Joshua 1:3

God promised Joshua the ground under his feet. We can walk the victory of Jesus into every part of our neighborhoods and cities.

Gather your Disciple Group, your family or a friend and walk your neighborhood, praying over the houses you pass. When you meet someone, ask what you can pray for.

02 / How should I pray?

Five types of prayer

Use these five as you walk. Shape them around the places you pass and the people you meet.

  1. Praise. Telling God how great He is

  2. Thanksgiving. Thanking God for what He does and gives

  3. Lament. Talking to God about what feels hard, hurtful or wrong

  4. Confession. Telling the truth about your sin

  5. Request. Asking God for something

Repentance

Daniel 9:3-19

Prayer points

  • Pray against what divides our nation
  • Ask God to forgive where we have failed to uphold justice, integrity and truth
  • Seek the Lord’s guidance in choosing leaders who govern with wisdom and compassion
  • Ask forgiveness for the biases and prejudices that shape how you see people
  • Pray for unity among neighbors and healing of divisions
  • Ask the Lord to humble us and heal our land as we seek His face
  • Pray with expectancy that His will would be done in our leadership

Tips for prayers of repentance

Spend time in silence before God. Take three deep, slow breaths. Close your eyes if that helps. Rest your whole self in Him, knowing you are as safe as a newborn with its mother, and let Him show you what needs to change.

Renewal

Ephesians 5:1-17; Genesis 11:1-9

Prayer points

  • Thank God for the chance to pursue renewal here
  • Ask God to make us a people who look like Jesus
  • Pray that our hearts would align with His kingdom, not worldly power
  • Ask the Lord to turn us away from building our own empires
  • Pray for wisdom for our leaders to honor God and serve people
  • Ask God for a passion for His presence, His Word and His people
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where renewal needs to start in you

Tips for prayers of renewal

Prayer cards keep your prayers in front of you. Write them on index cards and carry them in a pocket or purse. Pray them whenever you have a few minutes, or use them as a reminder to pray for specific people.

Radical Devotion

Romans 12:1-2; Revelation 14:1-5

Prayer points

  • Ask the Lord to show you where your faith has gone stagnant
  • Pray for discernment between God’s voice and every other voice
  • Ask the Spirit for courage to stand firm when it costs you
  • Pray that our church would carry Christ’s love and truth into this community
  • Ask God to keep an eternal perspective in front of you
  • Pray that your devotion would show up in how you treat people

Tips for prayers of devotion

Choose a passage that speaks to you and start your prayer there. Ask God to help you understand it or live it. Pray for the people and situations in it. The Lord’s Prayer, one phrase at a time, is a good place to start (Matt. 6:9-13).
