As For Me & My House: A 21 Day Devotional For Parents
Parents: Day 07 – Throwing and Gathering Stones
September 24, 2023
Key Scripture:
Ecclesiastes 3:5a – “A time to scatter stones and a time to gather them.”
Devotional:
As parents, our natural tendency can oftentimes be to hold our kids close and protect them from the world. In parenting, there are going to be moments when we need to scatter stones. Just as a farmer prepares soil by loosening it before planting seeds, there are times when we must allow our kids to explore and experience life on their own. Like their first day of school, the first time they are away from home, getting their driver’s license, or going away for college. As parents we need to give them the freedom to make choices and learn from their mistakes. It is our job to equip them with a solid foundation rooted in Jesus and let them excel in their own journey.
In addition to scattering stones, there is also a time to gather them. We must intentionally gather our children close to provide comfort and guidance. In our busy lives, it is essential to slow down and offer our undivided attention. By gathering our kids, we create an environment where they feel valued, accepted and deeply loved. I love to spend time before bed just sitting and talking to my boys individually, about how their day has been and asking how their heart is. I want them to know that how they are feeling is important to me and that they have my undivided attention.
In the Bible Jesus welcomes children and emphasizes their importance in the Kingdom of God by rebuking his disciples for preventing children from coming to him and saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
Questions for reflection:
- How can the concept of casting away stones relate to letting go of certain expectations we have for our children?
